This little drift wood sailboat is packed with interesting texture and potential sentimental value.
You could make a whole fleet of them for perfect little table centerpieces. Or just make one as a gift for someone with a beach house or a new baby boy.
Speaking a babies, what about a driftwood sailboat mobile?!! How cute would that be? I linked a couple below in the Shop This Look section.
I first got the idea of Pinterest (but of course!) and then later saw this tutorial from White Gun Powder.
I knew I had to try my own!
We collected our driftwood during a recent trip to my parents’ place on the beach and the handkerchiefs are from my grandma.
As a side note, I am a firm believer in using and enjoying antiques, even it means altering them for today’s uses.
I invited my daughter to join us as our guest for this post and she will show you step by step how to make a driftwood sailboat in the video above.
How to make a driftwood sailboat
Supplies
Driftwood, not more more than 10 inches long & able to lay flat on a surface.
Handkerchief or fabric you like
Dowel
Drill
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Screw eye
Needle, thread and straight pins
Fabric scissors
Tutorial
Cut dowel to desired length
Place dowel inside handkerchief and fold handkerchief in half.
Cut handkerchief from the corner to the top of the mast, remove dowel.
Fold cut edge over a tiny bit and pin in place.
Fold down the top point to cover the end of where the dowel will be and stitch in place.
Now replace the dowel and stitch right along the dowel really tight to hold the dowel in place.
Drill a hole for the dowel into one side of the driftwood.
Hot glue the dowel in place.
Determine where the tip of the sail ends and screw in the the screw eye.
Attach the tip of the sail to the screw eye with the needle and thread.
And that’s it! These little driftwood sailboats are going to be fun summer decorations to pull out each year for our family. Let me know if you have any questions!

Driftwood Coffee set to open in old town Peoria Arizona.
On episode 1 of LIVIN, I go out exploring looking for some cool driftwood. *This is going to be a new series called LIVIN. Along with the building and finishing videos, I will include some of the things I do in between those projects. Some of my everyday stuff, or LIVIN.
Supplies:
Cardboard
Fabric
Templates (Sizes depend on the sizes of your driftwood. I made my sails 3 1/2” x 2 1/4”, the triangle bunting 1/2” x 1/2”, & the flag 3/4” x 1”.)
Mod Podge
Paintbrush
2 Pieces of Driftwood (For the Hull & Mast)
Pencil
Twine
Needle
Ruler
Scissors
Pliers
Wire (I used jewelry wire as the eye screws & a piece of floral wire as a dowel.)
Drill
Nail
Hammer
Glue (E6000)
Cut your fabric into pieces large enough to fit your templates.
Go over them with a coat of mod podge. (This is to keep the fabric from fraying.)
Lift the pieces to make sure they don’t stick to the board.
Wait for them to dry & coat the back with mod podge. (Instead of using mod podge, another option is to sew the edges.)
Drill a couple of holes through the stick (mast), about 1/4” less than the ends of your sail template.
Also, make holes at the top & bottom of the stick.
Drilling the thicker driftwood (hull) seemed to take forever, so I decided to create holes using a nail & hammer. I made 3 holes: the center, near the bow (front), and stern (back) of the boat.
I made wire wrapped loops to attach my fabric to the driftwood. (Although, you could just use eye screws.)
For the mast (stick), I made a wrapped loop, placed it through the hole, and made another wrapped loop. I also twisted wire to make a flagpole.
Cut your fabric into the shapes of your triangle templates. I ended up using the 3 1/2” x 2 1/4” triangle for both sails because the other template was to big. For the triangle bunting and flag, I folded the fabric before cutting a triangle (so it was shaped like a diamond).
Glue your wrapped loops to the driftwood and attach (also with glue) the mast (stick) to the center (of the hull) using a piece of wire as a dowel.
Glue the twisted wired inside of the folded flag and attach it to the top of the boat.
Puncture holes near the the corners of the sails, add twine, & attach them to the loops with a double knot.
Glue the tiny folded triangles to twine (for bunting) and tie the ends to the loops.
I added a dot of glue over each knot to secure it and painted a heart on the boat.
