This creates a high density and heavy weight. It also has a high degree of rot-resistance (even from moisture) and bug resistant / protection properties. The tree was once a pine tree and the specific variety is unknown except for the fact that it grew in Florida. Most likely, the Southern longleaf pine (Pinus palustris), which historically was highly valued for its high pitch production. The reason for the strange spiral-like curvature is most likely due from a lightning strike. Normally, the sap wood develops from the inner portion of the tree that was laden with the most sap. In this very unusual case, the intensity of the sap was concentrated in the outer portion as does happen with a lightning strike. Lightning will also twist around the tree, as seen here with some spiral effects. *For Clarification, the term driftwood is not actually correct but only used here as a generic identifier/modifier for the shaping of wood into a decorative artform by naturally occurring actions.
