Welcome to Aquascape TV.
This time we will share to you, our Driftwood Aquarium Design. In this video, we will guide you about step by step to make this beautiful planted tank layout.
First, make a hardscape of rocks, wood or other decoration material of your taste. A nice hardscape creates room and perspective for both fish and plants.
Then add about 1 centimeter of substrate below the gravel to give long term nutrient storage for the growth of plants. The gravel is distributed with the slope upwards towards the rear wall of the aquarium. This way, you can achieve depth and perspective.
The easiest way to plant in the aquarium is at a water level just a few centimeters from the bottom.
Twelve different plants live in this aquarium, growing under the water surface, on tree roots and stones. The large hardscape in the middle, consisting of driftwood and mini landscape, is a vital part of the aquarium layout. On the journey through the aquarium, you will continue to discover new things, e. g. small prawns, peeking out here and there from plant thickets or the hardscape. Since most of the plants also grow quickly, this will add constant change to the aquascape, which will never seem boring to the viewer.
Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoy the video. Don’t forget to like and subscribe for more aquascape videos.

The majority of succulents growing in nature are not found growing on the beach, but for whatever reason, this pairing works really well.
Some succulent cuttings are much longer lasting than others but they all need something to root into to keep them looking fresh for the long haul. Succulents will hot glue directly onto the driftwood but if you use something coarser to attach to, like moss or sheet coir, they’ll adhere much better & be easier to water.
You may not have a beach nearby you but no frets because driftwood is available online. Or, any kind of interesting wood will do. I often use palm debris (I’m not sure what else to call it!) for creating art with succulents and air plants. It’s free, tough and interesting. Be sure to keep your eyes open when you out for a walk – you’ll be surprised at what Mother Nature presents you with.

3 Ways To Attach Succulents To Driftwood, So They Can Grow / Joy Us garden

I live in Santa Barbara just 7 blocks from the ocean and love to go for beach walks. I used to collect shells and rocks to use as ground cover in my garden but these days my attention is focused on driftwood which I use for my various crafting projects. I spotted the chunk you see right below up next to the cliffs and thought it would be purrrrfect to use as a piece of art with tillandsias (aka tillys or air plants) and succulents. I was the envy of every dog on the beach as I slung it over my shoulder (it’s over 4′ long) and began my hour march on back to the car. This is one big fetch stick!
This project is easy to do. It’s just a matter of laying out the ingredients in a manner which is visually appealing to you. As the adornments, I used succulent cuttings taken from my garden and tillandsias which I have been collecting (note: they’re addicting!). I started with the biggest tilly and the biggest succulent because they are the trickiest to hold in place so I wanted to make sure I had the right spots to anchor them in.
I’ve balanced out the different colors of the tillandsias and succulents so there’s interest up and down the whole piece. What I like about this is that it rests beautifully on a table or hangs easily on a wall as it is nice and light. I would love this hanging in my kitchen that way I could see it all the time. Happy creating everyone!
As for the tillandsias, we have you covered! You’ll find a fine assortment of them waiting for you on our website: http://www.joyusgarden.com/tillandsias

Aquariums arranged during the live aquascaping contest, organized at ZooBotanica 2012 fair held on 14-16 September 2012 in Wrocław, Poland. Altogether 16 aquascapers took part in the contest, and 16 nanoaquariums were arranged. There were both planted aquariums and biotope aquariums, some of them really good. The first place was a planted aquarium with rare aquarium plant Bucephalandra, which belongs to the Araceae family. The second place was a composition based on fragments of driftwood, overgrown with phoenix moss and mini pellia. The third place was a layout arranged rather as a “landscape” than an aquascape – two hills, separated by a clear path made of fine sand, and a lonely tree, made of fragment of driftwood. Aquatic plants used in this composition were mostly Eleocharis and Utricularia. As for other aquariums, there was a very nice biotope aquarium, imitating a stream somewhere in South Eastern Asia. The substrate was fine bright sand, there were numerous colorful pebbles on the bottom, lots of driftwood and very nice Microsorum plants. This aquarium was stocked with Stiphodon gobies. Another very original composition was actually not an aquascape, but rather a protest against all forms of kitsch in the fishkeeping hobby. There was a fishbowl put inside the nanoaquarium, with plastic plant and empty sardines can, with the inscription “Fishbowl, Rest in Peace”. Such exhibit should be located in every pet shop, to remind the customers and the sellers what should be avoided in the fishkeeping hobby 🙂
