It’s a good practice to sanitize anything that might be added to your fish tank to avoid contamination.
Be careful adding materials from the outside. Some rocks (limestone, Texas holey rock just to name 2) change pH of the water. Depending upon exactly what you are keeping this could be a preferable (or unfavorable) impact.
Immersing rocks in boiling water threatens since water caught within the rock might vaporize. This could trigger the rock to explosively burst.
Pouring boiling water on rocks or driftwood is a more secure method to decontaminate the exterior of the item.
